Even if you live in Dallas and haven’t met Lou Olerio, you’ve certainly seen his houses around town. For over ten years, Lou has cemented himself as a heavyweight home builder in the DFW area. Inspired by the likes of Jack Arnold and Hays Town, Lou brings to each of his homes a classic aesthetic and a livable design that’s perfectly crafted for the modern home owner. Today, we’re talking with Lou about his favorite Flower Road products and how to make your home more environmentally friendly.
Flower Road: When did you discover Flower Road?
Lou Olerio: I met Michelle and was introduced to Flower Road when she was looking at a house I built 7 or 8 years ago. After that, I went in for a treatment. She used a combination of Roman and German Chamomile and I’ve never done acid… but I’m sure that’s what an acid trip must be like, or whatever people take to get that kind of feeling!
FR: What are your favorite Flower Road products?
LO: For skincare, I like Lavender Cream. Lavender and Peppermint are my favorite essential oils, and because of my Hippocratic Temperament, Prana is my preferred Botanical Formula.
FR: Tell us what you do? What are your hobbies?
LO: I am a custom home builder and real estate developer. As for hobbies, I like to travel, dining out, watching movies and playing with my dogs.
FR: As a custom home builder, what do you think makes a good house?
LO: It’s important that it’s consistent. The design elements should flow together and the finishes should match.
FR: How would you describe the style of the homes you build?
LO: They’re classic with timeless exteriors and transitional interiors that reflect today’s homeowners. As for the interior details, you’ll see a clean aesthetic with straight lines, light finishes, white marbles and a neutral color palette throughout.
FR: Who are some architects that inspire your work?
LO: Jack Arnold and Hays Town.
FR: Why do you choose to build in Dallas?
LO: I went to SMU grew up in the northeast. I enjoyed the climate thought it was a good community to get involved in. I started buying real estate in ’99, really enjoyed it and kept with it. I started building professionally in 2007.
FR: What differences do you notice between homes in the northeast and in Dallas?
LO: People here take a lot more pride in the upkeep of their home and the interior design elements and finishes even. People back home don’t keep up with their properties, it’s not a priority for them.
FR: If you could come back to life in another century, which would it be and why?
LO: 19th century. That was an extraordinary time of evolution in terms of technology and seeing how much changed in a 50-year span.
FR: What are your tips to make a home more “green”?
LO: If you can afford it, switch over to LED. The light is cleaner and you get 10 to 20 thousand hours of light and you don’t have to change them in 10 years. What we’re doing now is LED strip tape, they use a lot less energy. In the last few years, Dallas building code has been getting tougher and tougher. We install low-flow toilets and shower heads, drip irrigation and more efficient AC systems. In the next couple years, foam installation will be the standard. At the moment, you see foam in upgraded homes because it is more expensive, but it will be in all of them soon.
FR: What words of wisdom do you live your life by?
LO: Do things the right way consistently.
