Rachael and Rainer Schneck are the husband and wife duo at the heart of Inwood Village’s boutique hair oasis, PIN Salon. Veterans of the Dallas hair community, these two are known for their style, charisma and mane-taming techniques. Today, we’re talking with these dear friends and hairstylists about green living, the importance of eco-friendly beauty and what hair trends are on their radar for spring.
Flower Road: When did you discover Flower Road?
Rachael: Michelle came to me to get her hair done 10 years ago. While I was highlighting her hair, we started talking and I discovered her oils and have been using them ever since.
FR: Valentine’s Day is around the corner… what are your tips for being married and working together? We’re impressed!
Rachael: We give each other space on our days off without saying anything. If I need to go to yoga and be by myself, I go. If he needs to go fishing, I give him his space and he comes home when he feels like it. A lot of couples spend their weekends together, but it’s important for us to not only have family time but to also have moments throughout the day where we do our own thing.
FR: What is your go-to green living tip?
Rachael: At home we use dye-free, scent-free detergents and cleaning products, we eat organic, sustainable foods, and we recycle whenever possible. At the salon, we make a point to be eco-friendly whenever possible. One of the brands we use regularly is Kevin.Murphy because it’s sulphate-free, paraben-free and cruelty-free.
FR: What is your favorite Flower Road product?
Rachael: Lavender Cream is my favorite. Whether I’m in the mountains or at the pool, I put it on to keep my skin looking hydrated and fresh. Skin always looks better when it’s moisturized! As for essential oils, I like Ravintsara, Lavender, Magnolia, and I recently discovered Botanical Formulas Bluegreen and Repose. I use that combination on my achy shoulder – it’s a nice perfume too and I get all of the healing benefits of it, too!
FR: Do you use any Flower Road products on your daughter?
Rachael: We massage her feet and legs with Lavender Cream mixed with a drop of Ravintsara. I use the Lavender Cream on her face as well, and she keeps Lavender essential oil in her bathroom and she uses a drop on her wrists before school and in the evening before bed.
FR: What hair trends are you seeing for spring?
Rainer: Everyone is going for the less is more, undone look right now. Think free-flowing, California style. Blonde is really big right now, as well as color with depth and relaxed, lived-in waves.
FR: What are your tips for being more “green” when it comes to beauty?
Rainer: Use less products, people think the more suds, the better – they want to feel more moving around – but that’s not always necessary. One pump is enough to shampoo for someone with really thick hair, but at home, without a pump, when you pour shampoo or conditioner in your hand, you’d be surprised by how much more you’re using. So always start with less, and add more if necessary.
FR: What should someone ask for at the salon if they want highlights, but also want to be eco-friendly?
Rachael: Start requesting color.me by Kevin Murphy. It is a less aggressive and irritating hair color with the same long lasting results as conventional color. Using this line does not compromise the natural luster we are all looking for. It also has less odor and smells more of rosehip oil and aloe.
This is a healthier and green approach to hair color not only for the guest but also for the hairstylist who is exposed to chemicals all day, every day. I’m grateful there are companies like this one who give us options to do what we love while using ingredients we feel good about.
FR: How are haircare and skincare similar?
Rainer: Both need to be moisturized. Conditioner gets a bad rep because people say it makes their hair feel limp. However, hair doesn’t have nerve endings, so unlike skin, you can only feel how dry or moisturized it is when you touch it with your hands. Everyone is in the habit of applying moisturizer to their skin after washing – so why not apply conditioner to your hair after washing?
FR: In terms of green living, what do you wish people more people would practice?
Rainer: People use a lot of detergent on their skin. You can still get clean without using that much product!
FR: How do you encourage people to be more green when it comes to beauty?
Rainer: Choosing green beauty products is about more than saving the environment – it’s about you, it’s about making healthy, friendly choices for your skin, your body, and your family.
FR: What are your favorite words of wisdom?
Rainer: Take no risks, live no life.
