Flower Roadie: Angel Irvin

Angel

Flower Road: When did you discover Flower Road?

Angel Irvin: I met Michelle in 2008 and shortly thereafter was introduced to Flower Road. This was the first time I truly began to understand essential oils and their physiological effects. And, given the choice, I much prefer an alternative medicine to achieve health and well-being.

FR: What do you do in life – what do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, etc.?

AI: I solve people’s problems with insurance. I have been doing that for 17 years. As for insurance, there are a lot of products that are offered, home is one of the main ones I tend to lead in with, mortgage protection and auto insurance, commercial, recreational vehicles and second homes…basically anything you need to insure. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my dogs, and I serve on the Lambda Legal board, and I love to travel.

FR: What’s your favorite part of the process?

AI: When people get into a new home or a new car, or open a new business, there’s a lot of joy a lot of excitement. With such a big purchase comes a lot of future planning, so I often help my clients do their financial future planning at the same time. New homes and new cars are fun times for people, so I focus on that rather than the claims process of insurance, which are not fun times.

FR: What are your three tips to avoid disaster?

AI: Keep up with your maintenance, prevent further damage, and repair immediately.

FR: What your suggestions or tips for people who have just purchased a new home?

AI: Make sure you are insured properly. The value in insurance rests in knowing the difference between simply having insurance and actually being insured. That is what I teach my clients.

FR: If you could come back to life in another century, which would it be and why?

AI: I try, as hard as it is sometimes, to live in the now. I do like to travel, but time travel is another thing. Going back even one century, you lose a lot of conveniences, and I will admit to being somewhat spoiled!

FR: What is your favorite Flower Road product?

AI: Renne Cream, for sure. I do enjoy Lavender Cream, but Renne is tops.

IMG_3085_750_B

FR: What’s your favorite essential oil?

AI: Ravintsara and Lavender. Ravintsara is good for a myriad of things, so I like its versatility.

FR: What’s your favorite FR formula?

AI: Conifer. I’ve learned that it’s not about the smell, but the effect the oil has. That being said, Conifer smells amazing – like a walk through the forest.

IMG_3091_750_B

FR: What is your go-to green living tip?

AI: Refuse, reuse, recycle.

FR: What’s your pet peeve when it comes to green living, i.e. things people don’t do for the planet?

AI: I don’t like that people don’t get, or ignore the fact, that we need to take care of our planet. Ask any polar bear you know – it’s important.

Flower Roadie: Lou Olerio

IMG_3127_750_B

Even if you live in Dallas and haven’t met Lou Olerio, you’ve certainly seen his houses around town. For over ten years, Lou has cemented himself as a heavyweight home builder in the DFW area. Inspired by the likes of Jack Arnold and Hays Town, Lou brings to each of his homes a classic aesthetic and a livable design that’s perfectly crafted for the modern home owner. Today, we’re talking with Lou about his favorite Flower Road products and how to make your home more environmentally friendly.

Flower Road: When did you discover Flower Road?

Lou Olerio: I met Michelle and was introduced to Flower Road when she was looking at a house I built 7 or 8 years ago. After that, I went in for a treatment. She used a combination of Roman and German Chamomile and I’ve never done acid… but I’m sure that’s what an acid trip must be like, or whatever people take to get that kind of feeling!

FR: What are your favorite Flower Road products?

LO: For skincare, I like Lavender Cream. Lavender and Peppermint are my favorite essential oils, and because of my Hippocratic Temperament, Prana is my preferred Botanical Formula.

IMG_3134_750_B

IMG_3142_750_B

FR: Tell us what you do? What are your hobbies?

LO: I am a custom home builder and real estate developer. As for hobbies, I like to travel, dining out, watching movies and playing with my dogs.

FR: As a custom home builder, what do you think makes a good house?

LO: It’s important that it’s consistent. The design elements should flow together and the finishes should match.

FR: How would you describe the style of the homes you build?

LO: They’re classic with timeless exteriors and transitional interiors that reflect today’s homeowners. As for the interior details, you’ll see a clean aesthetic with straight lines, light finishes, white marbles and a neutral color palette throughout.

FR: Who are some architects that inspire your work?

LO: Jack Arnold and Hays Town.

FR: Why do you choose to build in Dallas?

LO: I went to SMU grew up in the northeast. I enjoyed the climate thought it was a good community to get involved in. I started buying real estate in ’99, really enjoyed it and kept with it. I started building professionally in 2007.

FR: What differences do you notice between homes in the northeast and in Dallas?

LO: People here take a lot more pride in the upkeep of their home and the interior design elements and finishes even. People back home don’t keep up with their properties, it’s not a priority for them.

FR: If you could come back to life in another century, which would it be and why?

LO: 19th century. That was an extraordinary time of evolution in terms of technology and seeing how much changed in a 50-year span.

FR: What are your tips to make a home more “green”?

LO: If you can afford it, switch over to LED. The light is cleaner and you get 10 to 20 thousand hours of light and you don’t have to change them in 10 years. What we’re doing now is LED strip tape, they use a lot less energy. In the last few years, Dallas building code has been getting tougher and tougher. We install low-flow toilets and shower heads, drip irrigation and more efficient AC systems. In the next couple years, foam installation will be the standard. At the moment, you see foam in upgraded homes because it is more expensive, but it will be in all of them soon.

FR: What words of wisdom do you live your life by?

LO: Do things the right way consistently.

March at Flower Road

“The home should be the treasure chest of living.” – Le Corbusier

This month at Flower Road, we are turning our attention to all things home. In many ways, the home is the heart of life on earth. This is where families gather in good times and in bad, this is where we celebrate holidays and carry out mundane activities of the everyday. At home, we make intimate memories, nurture those we love, and freely express who we are without judgement or fear.

The home is a complex, comforting place. It’s a sanctuary to recuperate, and a treasure chest in which to hold cherished people and items. Your home is not just a place in which to sleep, eat and bathe, it’s a place to decorate, to protect and to enliven.

IMG_0252_750_B

Throughout the course of the month, we will be introducing you to Flower Roadies who are home professionals. From designing homes to selling homes and insuring homes, these individuals make home more than a place, they make it their purpose and their passion.

We also hope to inspire you this month to do some green spring cleaning! Get down and dirty with baking soda and vinegar to deodorize, lift stains, and scrub each inch of your domicile clean. A few essential oils don’t hurt either… Until March 31, keep an eye on social media for tips and tricks to refresh your home with flower power. We’re offering our beautiful, limited edition French Linen spray for just $22 during March. There are many different ways to use this versatile geranium and lavender spray. Spray it on your sheets or clothing before ironing, or spray it onto hard, non-porous surfaces and wipe it down for a fresh, clean scent.

Here’s to a happy home!

Flower Roadie: Sara Lawrence

sara-lawrenceFebruary at Flower Road has been all about love – self love, true love, found love and lost love. To end the month, we thought there would be nothing better than to close on a love of a lifetime that we’ve seen with our own eyes. In 2003, Michelle met Sarah and her husband Rick, who came to Flower Road in search of a solution for an achy shoulder.

img_9991

Rick and Sarah were teenagers in love and married in 1972. This dynamic duo worked together, had two beautiful daughters, traveled extensively, pursued ballroom dancing in their free time and were pioneers in green living. After a valiant battle with cancer, Rick passed away from lung cancer in December 2014. A devoted husband, loving father and incredible man, Rick is missed deeply by all.

Today we’re talking to our sweet friend and client, Sarah, about her latest travels, green living techniques and the words of wisdom that inspire her during a time of great change.

Flower Road: What is your favorite Flower Road product?

Sarah Lawrence: Renne Cream – I also love Egyptian Elixir, I use them together sometimes, it just depends. I use Renne Cream morning and night, I also use the formulas occasionally on my wrists or hands. Conifer if I feel sluggish, lifts me up a little bit.

img_2495_750_b

FR: When did you discover Flower Road?

SL: Rick really discovered it, it was back when you were in the house on Bordeaux. Rick had an achy shoulder, and was looking for an alternative solution to the pain other than surgery. Michelle did leech therapy on him and it helped! He always smelled good when he came home from his treatments. He used to love the Lavender Cream for his skin.

FR: What is your temperament?

SL: Phlegmatic. So that’s why I’ve been using conifer – it’s good for invigorating phlegmatics!

FR: What do you do in life – what do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, etc.?

SL: At the moment, I’m trying to figure out how to live on my own without a fulltime companion or lover. I want to know, how do people do this? I’ve been traveling a lot in the last year and really enjoying that. My next trip is planned for April, I’ll be in Spain for the Seville Festival.

FR: If you could come back to life in another century, which would it be and why?

SL: 14th century – everything was really rough back then, so I’d have to be way up, I’d have to be a royal – I wouldn’t want to be a peasant – empress, goddess, queen… I’d even take princess.

FR: What is your go-to green living tip?

SL: No water bottles, and I recycle everything, even clothes. I have a whole house filtration system so all of our water is drinkable. We’ve got these big tanks for the whole house, so now it’s hard to drink any other water because it doesn’t taste as good. I just get glasses and fill them up at Whole Foods and that’s what I do for water. And I don’t run my AC very much, and I put my heat on 65 or less. Our garden is full of native or adaptive plants that require only a small amount of water. We’ve been doing these things since the ‘70s – we use to get Mother Earth News in 1972 before it was popular. We also had boxes for raised beds, and a vegetable garden in West Texas.

FR: What’s your pet peeve when it comes to green living, i.e. things people don’t do for the planet?

SL: It bothers me when people don’t recycle simple things, why throw away a cardboard box when you can recycle it? That and water bottles.

FR: What are your favorite words of wisdom?

SL: Rick and I always liked to travel, and a perfect quote to embody that feeling is Mark Twain’s quote, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Another great quote is by Joseph Campbell, “We must let go of the life we have planned so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.”

Flower Roadies: Cam and Clarissa

cam-and-clarissa

Flower Road: What is your favorite Flower Road product?

We love the sprays… Lavender Fields, Cold and Flu, and Merry. We also love the Lavender Cream – we mix it with certain essential oils to rub on the feet.

img_2132_750_b

FR: When did you discover Flower Road?

I fell in love at first sniff! Michelle put a sample bag together for a charity golf tournament and we discovered Flower Road there. We admire Michelle’s intelligence, depth of knowledge and ability to explain a complicated system in very simple terms. Knowledge is power, and she has empowered her clients to make a difference in their own lives. As a client, one of the things I appreciate is the trust that we have in you and your products, which are created with integrity and quality. In the past, I’ve been sensitive to skincare products, but that’s never been the case with Flower Road because they aren’t laced with synthetics. I would confidently use Flower Road products on anyone from my 85-year-old mother or my grandson.

FR: What do you do in life – what do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, etc.?

Clarissa: I’m a legal representative at a global company
Cam: In my free time, I make writing pens with my grandson. Recently, we’ve also begun a project together repurposing backpacks. A girl that I coach that lives in Tyler is adopted from Buckner’s Children Home, and we’ve been helping her gather and repurpose backpacks for foster kids that need school supplies. So far, we’ve collected almost 300 bags – it’s really taken off!

FR: If you could come back to life in another century, which would it be and why?

Clarissa: Early 1900s… when did they invent air conditioning?
Cam: I’d want to go to 2075, to the future and to deep space.

FR: What’s your favorite essential oil or Botanical Formula?

Cam: Bergamot and then Botanical Formula STEM, we use it every day and I don’t even get upper respiratory infections any more. I also love the BLUEGREEN Botanical Formula. I use that like gold.
Clarissa: My favorite is Botanical Formula CHOULI OUD – it smells sexy.

chouli-oud_600_nb

FR: What is your go-to green living tip?

Buy organic! It’s imperative. Also, buy local and repurpose all that you can.

FR: What’s your pet peeve when it comes to green living, i.e. things people don’t do for the planet?

My pet-peeve is when there isn’t enough free-range for the livestock and people don’t make that a priority when they are shopping for meats or eggs. It’s important for people to know that there is no difference between free-range and cage-free eggs – instead, look for pasture-raised. Another pet peeve is the lack of food recycling and sharing. For instance, we raised chickens, and shelters, food banks, etc. would not take the eggs from our chickens. Also, we eat food even when it’s slightly past expiration. Again, homeless shelters won’t take any food past expiration, but it’s very wasteful and contributes to the larger problem of hunger and trash production.

FR: What are your favorite words of wisdom?

Grace. Forgiveness. Be kind.

Flower Roadies: Rachael and Rainer Schneck

rachael-and-rainerRachael and Rainer Schneck are the husband and wife duo at the heart of Inwood Village’s boutique hair oasis, PIN Salon. Veterans of the Dallas hair community, these two are known for their style, charisma and mane-taming techniques. Today, we’re talking with these dear friends and hairstylists about green living, the importance of eco-friendly beauty and what hair trends are on their radar for spring.

Flower Road: When did you discover Flower Road?

Rachael: Michelle came to me to get her hair done 10 years ago. While I was highlighting her hair, we started talking and I discovered her oils and have been using them ever since.

FR: Valentine’s Day is around the corner… what are your tips for being married and working together? We’re impressed!

Rachael: We give each other space on our days off without saying anything. If I need to go to yoga and be by myself, I go. If he needs to go fishing, I give him his space and he comes home when he feels like it. A lot of couples spend their weekends together, but it’s important for us to not only have family time but to also have moments throughout the day where we do our own thing.

FR: What is your go-to green living tip?

Rachael: At home we use dye-free, scent-free detergents and cleaning products, we eat organic, sustainable foods, and we recycle whenever possible. At the salon, we make a point to be eco-friendly whenever possible. One of the brands we use regularly is Kevin.Murphy because it’s sulphate-free, paraben-free and cruelty-free.

img_3352_b

FR: What is your favorite Flower Road product?

Rachael: Lavender Cream is my favorite. Whether I’m in the mountains or at the pool, I put it on to keep my skin looking hydrated and fresh. Skin always looks better when it’s moisturized! As for essential oils, I like Ravintsara, Lavender, Magnolia, and I recently discovered Botanical Formulas Bluegreen and Repose. I use that combination on my achy shoulder – it’s a nice perfume too and I get all of the healing benefits of it, too!

img_3344_750_b

FR: Do you use any Flower Road products on your daughter?

Rachael: We massage her feet and legs with Lavender Cream mixed with a drop of Ravintsara. I use the Lavender Cream on her face as well, and she keeps Lavender essential oil in her bathroom and she uses a drop on her wrists before school and in the evening before bed.

img_3330_750_b

FR: What hair trends are you seeing for spring?

Rainer: Everyone is going for the less is more, undone look right now. Think free-flowing, California style. Blonde is really big right now, as well as color with depth and relaxed, lived-in waves.

FR: What are your tips for being more “green” when it comes to beauty?

Rainer: Use less products, people think the more suds, the better – they want to feel more moving around – but that’s not always necessary. One pump is enough to shampoo for someone with really thick hair, but at home, without a pump, when you pour shampoo or conditioner in your hand, you’d be surprised by how much more you’re using. So always start with less, and add more if necessary.

FR: What should someone ask for at the salon if they want highlights, but also want to be eco-friendly?

Rachael: Start requesting color.me by Kevin Murphy. It is a less aggressive and irritating hair color with the same long lasting results as conventional color. Using this line does not compromise the natural luster we are all looking for. It also has less odor and smells more of rosehip oil and aloe.
This is a healthier and green approach to hair color not only for the guest but also for the hairstylist who is exposed to chemicals all day, every day.  I’m grateful there are companies like this one who give us options to do what we love while using ingredients we feel good about.

FR: How are haircare and skincare similar?

Rainer: Both need to be moisturized. Conditioner gets a bad rep because people say it makes their hair feel limp. However, hair doesn’t have nerve endings, so unlike skin, you can only feel how dry or moisturized it is when you touch it with your hands. Everyone is in the habit of applying moisturizer to their skin after washing – so why not apply conditioner to your hair after washing?

FR: In terms of green living, what do you wish people more people would practice?

Rainer: People use a lot of detergent on their skin. You can still get clean without using that much product!

FR: How do you encourage people to be more green when it comes to beauty?

Rainer: Choosing green beauty products is about more than saving the environment – it’s about you, it’s about making healthy, friendly choices for your skin, your body, and your family.

FR: What are your favorite words of wisdom?

Rainer: Take no risks, live no life.
